Experience the thrill and scenic splendour of the Old Mutual Go2berg mountain bike race

Posted on 2 June 2023 By Lisa Abdellah

With six days of riding and 526km of pedalling across some of South Africa’s most scenic landscapes through the Free State and into the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal, the Old Mutual go2berg race attracts local and international riders who want to experience the camaraderie of trail riding.

Kicking off in the Free State town of Frankfort, the event appeals to competitive riders as well as those who want to witness the majesty of the Free State while traversing trails and gravel farm roads towards the foothills of the Maluti Mountains and the final destination, Champagne Castle resort in the Drakensberg.

‘From 3-9 June, the race offers various stages, ranging from a 22km warm-up (prologue) in Frankfort to a 112km leg between Reitz and Clarens. Aptly known as the Ride the Beloved Country race, this event is an opportunity for mountain bikers to test their tenacity,’ says Mosala Phillips, Chief Marketing Officer of Old Mutual.

‘We take pride in involving communities, local charities, farmers’ associations and schools throughout the event. By providing refreshments along the roads, setting up the five race villages, erecting tents, and offering catering services, these communities benefit from the largest racing event of the year, often crucial for these isolated regions,’ adds Phillips.

Undoubtedly, the most challenging part of the go2berg race is the 112km stretch on day two. Taking riders from Reitz to Clarens, this segment includes 1 497m of ascents and descents, providing a demanding ride for those who are not adequately prepared.

From there, the route continues through the scenic Golden Gate National Park, the trails near Mount Paul, and finally reaches Sterkfontein Dam on the escarpment that descends rapidly into KwaZulu-Natal.

The go2berg event caters to everyone and serves as an ideal ride for individuals transitioning from three-day rides to longer races. The scenery is spectacular, and the route is remote enough that, on some days, fellow bikers will be the only traffic in sight.

‘As some routes are privately accessed and negotiated by the organisers specifically for this event, participants have the chance to experience something unique that cannot be replicated,’ says event organiser Craig Wapnick. ‘Old Mutual’s sponsorship of this prominent mountain bike race highlights the natural beauty of our country and, more importantly, the people who have contributed to its reputation as one of the most hospitable places in the world.’

Phillips concludes, ‘When enjoyment and community interests align, we all emerge as winners. While the riders may leave behind faint tracks upon their return home, the value created through the ability to generate funds for local projects will remain a lasting reminder of the event and Old Mutual’s involvement.’
