A fire has broken out on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on Friday, 21 October but is largely contained as of Sunday.
The fire began at the Karanga Campsite at about 4 000 m altitude, reports The Guardian. The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined, though national parks official Herman Batiho said it is likely due to humans poaching or illegally extracting honey on the mountain.
‘We have seen great success in controlling the fire. To a large extent, it’s already extinguished in most areas although there are still smokes,’ said Eliamani Sedoyeka from the natural resources and tourism ministry.
A tour operator, Abraham Moshi of Exuberant Kilimanjaro Safaris, told Sky News that residents are eagerly awaiting the summer rains. ‘Right now is dry season, we’re still pretty much in the dry season. Rains are supposed to start now into November, but we still haven’t received rain yet. It’s pretty much dry and windy – that could affect the fire,’ he said.
