South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that fires broke out at two rest camps in the Kruger National Park (KNP) on Monday evening, but no injuries or loss of life were reported.

According to TimesLive KNP spokesperson Ike Phaahla, the first fire occurred at Satara Rest Camp when embers from a braai fire ignited the thatch roof of a chalet.

‘The fire was quickly contained before it could spread to other structures,’ Phaahla stated. A similar incident unfolded at Olifants Rest Camp, where three chalets had to be evacuated as the fire spread. While the blaze was contained, it was not possible to salvage the belongings of the affected guests.

The park is experiencing hot, windy, and dry weather conditions, which increase the risk of fires. Phaahla urged visitors to fully extinguish their braai fires after use to minimize risks to structures and the environment.

He also expressed SANParks’ appreciation for the swift response of emergency teams, including rangers and the Phalaborwa Fire Brigade, whose efforts helped bring the fires under control. Affected guests have been relocated to other rest camps for the duration of their stay.
