The Drakensberg’s Mafadi, located along the border of South Africa and Lesotho, is the highest peak in South Africa at 3,450m. The Red Bull Air Force team took to the mountain range recently to launch off this jagged mountain in wingsuits. With cameras mounted on their helmets, these daredevils soared through the sky, capturing footage of the iconic range from a bird’s eye viewpoint.
The team consisted of Jon DeVore, Mike Swanson and Miles Daisher, as well as Julian Boulle, a South African wingsuit pilot and Gloei Cilliers, a local mountain expert and guide.
‘There’s the moment you commit to pushing off the cliff. This moment is when everything slows down and a pure calmness comes over you… You are basically forced into the flow state of mind… You notice everything, from a small insect buzzing by you to the colours of the rock wall that is racing by. It’s pure freedom!’ says
The Eastern Buttress was the launch-site the team chose. Standing approximately 3,000m above sea level, weather this high up can be unpredictable. However, the team found the perfect window for jumping and launched from the mountain.
