A former national park ranger and a state veterinarian found in possession of two rhino horns will appear in court this week as trial dates have been set from 17 until 19 August.
Former ranger Rodney Landela and former state vet Kenneth Motshotso were arrested in July 2016 after they were found in possession of two rhino horns, several poaching instruments, a rifle and 17 rounds of ammunition.
Landela was said to be an exemplary ranger, having climbed the ranks to a regional ranger during his 15-year career, according to City Press.
They were caught in the act on the day of their arrest when three gunshots alarmed nearby rangers and they came across two men fleeing in a bakkie, leaving a rhino carcass behind.
This is not the first time rangers have been implicated in poaching activities, with two field rangers in Kruger National Park arrested in April on charges related to fraud, money laundering and corruption.
