Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula announced that Mthatha Airport in the Eastern Cape, Hoedspruit Airport and Phalaborwa Airport in Limpopo and Margate Airport in KwaZulu-Natal will resume operations during Level 2.
‘We are encouraged by the levels of cooperation and compliance with our directions by all South Africans and transport operators across all modes,’ he said according to The South African. ‘Our ability to ensure safe mobility relies on this cooperation. We encourage our people to remain resilient.’
Mthatha Airport is one of the four airports that recently reopened.
International travel is still off limits however and the Association for Southern African Travel Agents (ASATA) has made a call on Government to determine a date for the reopening of borders.
‘In order for the industry to survive this difficult time, a definite date for the reopening of international travel is imperative. A definite date for international travel would allow sufficient time for airlines to plan the reintroduction of flight schedules to South Africa,’ said ASATA CEO Otto de Vries according to IOL.
‘Travel agents and tour operators would be able to start compiling travel packages for the safe return of travellers to international corporate and leisure travel. To that end, the travel industry has contributed to the Tourism Business Council of South Africa’s stringent health and safety protocols.’

- Bram Fischer International Airport;
- Cape Town International Airport;
- East London Airport;
- George Airport;
- Hoedspruit Airport;
- Kimberly Airport;
- King Shaka International Airport;
- Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport;
- Lanseria International Airport;
- Margate Airport;
- Mthatha Airport;
- OR Tambo International Airport;
- Phalaborwa Airport;
- Pietermaritzburg Airport;
- Port Elizabeth International Airport;
- Richards Bay Airport;
- Skukuza Airport;
- Upington International Airport.
