Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that South Africa’s fuel levy will be reduced by R1.50 per litre from Wednesday 6 April until 31 May 2022.
The levy for petrol will be lowered from R3.85 per litre to R2.35 per litre, and the levy on diesel will be reduced from R3.70 per litre to R2.20 per litre, according to Cape Town Etc.
‘The intention of the temporary reduction of the general fuel levy is to support phasing in the fuel price increases that we are expecting in the short term. This will go some way in assisting South Africans to adjust to the new reality,’ Godongwana said.
This comes after the Automobile Association predicted petrol and diesel prices will rise in the first week of April by more than R2 a litre, with the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine pushing the price of oil to $130 a barrel.
Earlier this week, the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy has proposed a temporary ‘tax holiday’ from fuel to ease the pressure on South Africans.
