Ghana announces visa-free entry for all African passport holders

Posted on 7 January 2025

Ghana now permits visa-free entry for all African passport holders.

As reported by African Travel & Tourism Association, this decision was approved by the country’s outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo in December 2024. In his final state-of-the-nation address last Friday, he confirmed that the policy had come into effect at the beginning of this year.

The policy is in line with a commitment to foster stronger ties across Africa. According to Akufo-Addo, visa regulations for Africans serve as obstacles which hinder travel, tourism and trade.

As reported by The South African, Ghana is following in the footsteps of a few other African countries by allowing visa-free travel.

It is the fifth country in Africa to remove visa requirements for all African countries.

‘I am proud to have approved visa-free travel to Ghana for all African passport holders, with effect from the beginning of this year,’ said Akufo-Addo in his last address to parliament before stepping down after eight years in office.

Previously, Ghana had allowed visa-free access to nationals from only 26 African countries.

This new policy grants visa-free access to people from all 54 states including independent countries and dependencies.

In recent years, Ghana has promoted itself as a destination worth visiting, especially for people from across the continent and the African diaspora.
