London’s Heathrow Airport is investing $63.5 million (R942,190,775) in a cutting edge 3D technology, computed tomography (CT) security equipment, that will help speed up the security check process.
Previously, passengers have had to remove any liquids and laptops from their carry-on luggage to be placed in plastic sleeves for screening. The CT equipment allows security to rotate the image of each carry-on by 360 degrees to search for explosives and prohibited items.
The technology will drastically reduce security check-in time, making for a smoother travelling process. It will also help to reduce plastic waste at the airport as the plastic sleeves required for screening will become redundant.
According to Afar, Heathrow will be the first UK-based airport to introduce the new screening technology. It will be installed in the airport over the next few years, with the plan being for it to be fully installed in 2022. Amsterdam’s Schiphol already uses this 3D technology.
