Hiking season started on 1 May 2023 for the Fish River Canyon, but hikers will need to be assisted due to incredibly low water levels.
Following the river, hikers walk a minimum of 70 km. They usually don’t need to carry heavy loads of water as they can just drink from the river. They can even take a dip in the refreshing water on hot days.
However, Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) has revealed that ‘an assessment of Fish River Canyon was recently conducted by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. The assessment found that the water levels of the canyon are lower than expected due to the low rainfall season in the south of Namibia.’
Water marshals, with water points that have been set up in strategic locations, will ensure that hikers have access to safe drinking water. NWR says that the water marshals will ‘monitor water usage to conserve this valuable resource.’
Hikers have been advised to pack water purification tablets and large containers to carry the water they need.
