The renowned Morgenhof Wine Estate in the Western Cape was sold to a European buyer during a virtual action on 25 August 2021. The 329-year-old wine farm, the oldest property to ever be auctioned in South Africa was sold to the buyer for R52 million.

More than 2500 tuned into High Street Auction’s live-streamed virtual auction with bidding taking place via Zoom, the High Street app, live stream from the estate and telephonically.
Before the auction, registrations for the auction came from around the world with IOL reporting that buyers came from South Africa, Australia, China, Germany, Belgium, Lesotho, India, Italy, France, England, Kenya, Canada and the United States.
The winning bid was made telephonically by a buyer from Europe, who’d prefer to remain anonymous until the 14-day sale confirmation period is over.
With its viticulture traced back to 1692, the Morgenhof wine estate lies on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountain just outside Stellenbosch and has established itself as a reputable winery with a diverse range.

The buyer can then be pleased with their purchase, with the sale including the contents of the cellar as well as all the furniture and trimming on the farm.
On top of the pristinely restored 450m² main manor house comprises five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a lounge, dining room and kitchen as well as a wrap-around open terrace and a second manor house of 730m² elevated among the vineyards, the sale also includes:
- A 600-ton capacity wine cellar
- Underground barrel fermentation hall
- Wine tasting room and terrace;
- Restaurant
- Wedding chapel
- Conference venue with attached catering facilities
- Bistro and coffee shop
- Office block
- Staff accommodation of various types.
According to Moneyweb, the sale was the largest South African auction campaign ever run with 2.4 online million views. The current owner, Anne Cointreau, who initially moved from France to Morgenhof, would like to see the estate’s legacy continue for another three centuries. Anne is set to return to France to retire.
