Hong Kong’s Avenue of the Stars, was its most popular tourist attraction before it closed for rennovation in 2015. After years of revamping it officially reopened on 31 January 2019 as part of the Chinese New Year celebrations. The 457-meter waterfront avenue forms part of teh Tsim Sha Tsui promenade and offers spectacular views across Victoria Harbour from Kowloon.
The original promenade was opened in 1982 and then rebranded as the Avenue of Stars in 2004, with a cinematic concept similar to LA’s Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The redesign was headed up by landscape architect, James Corner in conjunction with the city’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department and New World Development and includes ‘more than a hundred newly designed celebrity handprints’ which are set within wooden handrails. Beneath the handprints are the stars’ biographies and selected movie clips can be viewed by scanning the QR codes with your smartphone.
The Hong Kong Film Awards Association statue and other statues along the walkway are decorated with water features and soft lighting. Visitors can interact with famous martial artist Bruce Lee’s statue using augmented reality technology, as well as that of former Hong Kong singer and actress Anita Mui’s statue.
According to the offical website for the Avenue of Stars, the refurbished site has an innovative and eco-friendly design and ‘features extend green spaces and enhanced leisure facilities’.
The avenue project is set to open in phases with a new K11 MUSEA museum/shopping centre planned as well as a hotel, residential and office buildings.
