Bushman’s Nek Berg and Trout Resort, a popular retreat located in the mountains of the Drakensburg, was burned to the ground in a blaze that began on Thursday night.
According to The Witness, guests recounted a “night from hell” as they awoke to find the resort consumed by flames.
Shakeen Samayiyi, who had arrived with his family earlier that day, described the terror of the situation. “When we went to bed at around 10 pm, there was a fierce wind that had already blown off a portion of the roof from one of the dwellings,” he said. The situation rapidly deteriorated as the fire approached from the surrounding veld.
As per The South African the blaze not only destroyed buildings but also damaged vehicles and personal property of guests.
In a statement, Bushman’s Nek management expressed their heartbreak over the fire.
“The flames have taken away more than just a beautiful destination; they’ve taken away a place where memories were made, laughter echoed, and nature’s serenity touched our souls,” they said.
Megan Bedingham from the Northern Drakensberg Tourism Community explained that winter months are known as fire hazard months in the region.
“Fire is always a risk in the winter months because it is a dry season. There are incredible Berg winds and even an accidental fire can be fuelled by the wind,”
said Berdingham, as quoted by The Witness.
As the resort grapples with the aftermath, management has promised to keep guests updated and address concerns. They are currently focused on relocating guests and staff, many of whom have lost possessions in the fire.
