A plan announced on 29 July 2024 at the Exporters Western Cape Conference states that City of Cape Town staff will receive full training to perform the duties of immigration officials. This in turn, will help passport control run smoothly and efficiently with an increase of staff.

He stipulated that passport control can take a few hours to clear when a number of international flights land at the same time and highlighted the importance of streamlined passport control gates.

“We will deploy city staff to the airport during peak times. We will cover the costs, but the condition is that they must be empowered to expedite the border process, not just greet people and hand out landing cards. You need to actually give them the power to get people through the border quickly”.

This essential training has been stated to commence in the following weeks.
