The coronavirus continues to tighten its grip on Italy. The country recorded its highest daily number of COVID-19 related deaths since the pandemic started, with 993 fatalities on December 3, according to BBC.

Italy has banned all inter-regional travel within the country between December 21 and January 6 to curb the spread of the virus. Residents will not be allowed to leave their homes on December 25, 26 and January 1 except for work, emergencies or essentials.

A national curfew will also be instated from 10pm to 5am over that period.

‘We must eliminate the risk of a third wave which could arrive in January – and not less serious than the first and the second,’ Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said during a briefing.

Recreational activities including ski slopes, entertainment venues and cruises will be closed.

Italy has a total number of 1.66 million confirmed COVID-19 cases and 59,031 deaths as of December 4.
