Japan will open its borders to visitors from 98 countries, after the country closed to tourists two years ago at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida credited his country’s strict policies with helping Japan to weather the pandemic; it recorded fewer than 30 000 deaths. From 10 June, visitors will be allowed to enter the country, but only as part of a tour group.
The list of 98 countries will be divided into three categories – red, yellow and blue – to determine whether or not visitors can bypass quarantine measures.
Code red countries require a three-day quarantine at a government-designated facility, but those with a valid vaccine certificate may have a three-day home quarantine followed by a negative test result.
Code yellow nations are not required to present a negative test result if they are vaccinated but those who are not will have to undergo a three-day home quarantine with a negative test result after the third day.
Code blue countries, which include South Africa, do not require a negative test result or quarantine regardless of vaccination status.
