The East and West Japan Theme Park Associations issued a ‘no screaming’ suggestion as part of its COVID-19 guidelines. The country lifted its state of emergency this week and theme parks are slowly starting to reopen.
This new approach to guest safety seems odd but is valid as oral droplets can be transferred very easily from screaming.
The Association is made up of over 30 theme parks, according to CNN. These include Universal Studios Japan and Oriental Land Company, the operator of both DisneySea and Tokyo Disneyland.
The guidelines include social distancing and hygienic measures such as wearing a face mask, taking temperatures and increased sanitising. The no screaming-guideline may be an impossible feat, as rollercoasters are known spike adrenaline levels.
Across the northern hemisphere, theme parks and other tourist attractions are starting to reopen in time for summer, albeit with strict safety and hygiene protocols.
