Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport is preparing for potential disruptions as a fire at the Natref refinery has disrupted jet fuel supplies. The refinery, a major source of fuel for the airport and the region, has halted operations at its crude distillation unit, which won’t resume until February 21, 2025.
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is working to offset the impact. According to Travelnews.africa a shipment of 17 000 cubic meters of jet fuel was secured and delivered on January 12, while another 31 000 cubic meters is expected by January 27. These efforts and alternative fuel transport methods like pipelines and rail aim to keep the airport running smoothly.
As a central hub for international and domestic flights, OR Tambo plays a critical role in South Africa’s economy, supporting tourism and trade. A prolonged shortage could lead to flight delays and cancellations, affecting passengers and airlines.
Acsa has pledged to keep all stakeholders updated and maintain operations as much as possible. Travelers are advised to monitor flight schedules closely as the airport navigates this logistical challenge. I just wanted to let you know that I expect further updates on fuel supplies and refinery repairs soon.
