Jet fuel supply secured at OR Tambo…until February

Posted on 20 January 2025 By Tsoku Maela

The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has assured travellers and airlines that the jet fuel supply at OR Tambo International Airport  in Johannesburg remains secure for January 2025, despite disruptions caused by a fire at the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (NATREF) refinery earlier this month. The fire, which occurred on January 4, has significantly impacted fuel production nationwide.

Currently, OR Tambo holds 27.1 million litres of jet fuel, sufficient to meet operational demands of 3.6 million litres per day until the week ending February 2, 2025 as per Travelnews.africa. With the total February fuel requirement projected at 97.2 million litres, operations at NATREF are expected to resume by February 27, 2025. To address interim challenges, ACSA is working closely with the Fuels Industry Association of Southern Africa (FIASA), NATREF partners, government bodies, and other stakeholders.

Key measures include prioritising fuel transport from Durban, optimising reserves at King Shaka International Airport, and exploring alternatives like tankering and fuel stops for airlines. Airlines have also been advised to adopt prudent fuel conservation strategies to maintain operational stability.
