Kruger National Park has activated its K-9 unit, with 60 dogs deployed throughout the two million-hectare reserve, to curb poaching.
The canines’ superior senses have assisted in more than 90% of arrests made in the park. Kruger’s K-9 unit was established seven years ago, and the trained dogs have proven to be an integral part of the anti-poaching efforts of South African National Parks (SANParks).
In an era in which poachers have become more heavily armed, dogs are a vital early warning and safety system for rangers, with their superior senses of smell, hearing and eyesight.
A total of 451 rhinos were poached in 2021, a decrease from the previous year. SANParks commented that the drop was down to the increased intensity of anti-poaching efforts, with the K-9 unit vital to their success.
