Tourists to Kenya will soon be spared from having to declare the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of their mobile devices upon arrival.
This is as per the new regulations by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) which are aimed at maintaining seamless entry for visitors while enhancing tax compliance.
As reported by African Travel & Tourism Association, Kenya plays a key role as a gateway to East Africa. It is also deemed a regional hub for tourism and business. As such, there exists a need for easy accessibility.
This new exemption will apply from January next year and is aimed at strengthening tax compliance. It will also reinforce the country’s mobile device market integrity, while easing the burden of compliance for foreigners entering Kenya.

All device importers and assemblers will be expected to submit detailed entries (including the quantities, model descriptions and IMEI numbers of devices) through the customs portal of the Kenya Revenue Authority. Permits will also have to be obtained from the Communications Authority of Kenya.
Importers and stakeholders are advised to familiarize themselves with the new requirements in order to ensure compliance and a smooth importing process.
