Kenya has implemented a high-tech monitoring system which is aimed at enhancing conservation efforts for the endangered rhino species.
As reported by African Travel & Tourism Association, a number of rhinos will receive unique ear monitors and tracking devices. The system will provide each rhino with a unique identifier, making it possible to monitor their health and behaviour.

According to Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary, Rebecca Miano, the trackers are aimed at improving monitoring across challenging terrain. The system also makes it possible to collect movement data which will enable informed conservation decisions.
This initiative is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and will monitor rhinos within the Tsavo West Conservation Area.
The broader focus is to protect the growing rhino population in Kenya. Currently, it stands at 1,977 and is inclusive of 1,004 black rhinos as well as 971 southern white rhinos.
This project also serves to reinforce the country’s commitment to global biodiversity and sustainability goals.
