Madagascar is currently experiencing its first severe tropical storm of the year, affecting even the beaches in KwaZulu Natal.
Cyclone Cheneso intensified on Wednesday night, 25 January, and as of 27 January, Municipalities along the east coast of South Africa began to close their beaches due to dangerous swimming conditions. The KwaZulu Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) has been ‘tracking the movement of cyclone Cheneso.’ Although it has been moving in a south-easterly direction, it is still causing ‘swell size to increase.’

The South African Weather Services says that it does not expect the storm to land in South Africa, but it could reach the Mozambican Channel.
Dylan Meyrick, IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, said that they ‘urge beachgoers to only swim at those beaches protected by lifeguards, and that remain open,’ reported IOL.
Beaches that have been closed will remain so until further notice.
