Landslide at Malaysian campsite kills 21

At least 21 people died and more are missing after a landslide occurred at a campsite in Batang Kali, Malaysia on 15 December. A 30-metre-high slope collapsed, but no heavy rainfall was reported in the area and the exact cause of the landslide is unclear.

Among the campers were children and school teachers, reports BBC. According to local authorities, the campsite had been operating illegally as it had not obtained the relevant permits.

After the tragedy, all “high-risk” sites, such as those located near bodies of water and waterfalls were ordered to close down for seven days.

Search and rescue teams are still working to find the missing persons.
