Lesotho-based airline operator, Mohahlaula Airlines, plans to launch a local airline with scheduled flights between Johannesburg and Maseru within the next year.
Airlink is currently the only airline offering scheduled commercial flights between Johannesburg and Maseru, following the collapse of Lesotho’s Maluti Sky six years ago.
Mohahlaula obtained an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) in February 2020, but the Covid pandemic prevented it from launching scheduled flights. For the past two years, the company has been operating private charters and cargo flights from Maseru.
The airline intends to start its scheduled flight service by September next year, operating an Embraer 145 aircraft which can take 45-50 passengers at a time.
‘It’s a service desperately required by Lesotho as the country grows economically and tourism picks up after the pandemic,’ CEO Phafane Nkotsi told Fin24. ‘We are looking forward to playing an essential role in driving Lesotho’s socio-economic growth.’
