A warning has been issued for the inhabitants of northern KwaZulu-Natal, specifically around the Gluckstadt areas, as an increase in lion activity has been reported in the area. Lion sightings have been confirmed, amongst other evidence, that these predators are roaming in the area, seemingly interested in the cattle of the area.

From livestock being mauled to footprints being detected, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife urges community members to report any further sightings. IOL has stated that Musa Mntambo, the spokesperson for the organisation, has made a statement about the sightings:

“There have been three recently confirmed sightings of lions in the Gluckstadt area, which is under the AbaQulusi Municipality. The sightings have been reported in the areas under Inkosi Zondo and Inkosi Zulu. Additionally, three cattle have been reported killed by lions in the Gluckstadt area recently.”

He also confirmed that two teams have been appointed to search for these lions, with one team being led by a professional hunter. A variety of capture methods have been implemented to track and secure the lions, such as helicopter surveillance, but have turned up unsuccessful.

Farmers in the area are urged not to keep their livestock in grazing areas overnight in order to minimise further animal attacks, as these wild creatures tend to be more active at night. Currently, there are no leads to where these lions have escaped from, and the search for these predators is still in progress.
