A lioness escaped her enclosure at an Iranian zoo before mauling a zookeeper, who died on the scene on Sunday 31 January. The zoo is situated at Arak, about 280km south of the capital, Tehran. The lioness escaped the enclosure with another lion, and the two continued to roam the zoo freely.
‘This afternoon one of the carers entered the cage to feed the lion and sadly lost their life after being attacked and suffocated,’ Arak Mayor Alireza Karimi said according to the BBC.
The lioness pushed open an iron lever to open the door of the enclosure, releasing herself before attacking the carer.
The pair of lions were recaptured after police, firefighters and government officials mounted an operation.
