Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid statue in Denmark has been vandalised with spray paint. Written on the rock where the statue is perched someone has written ‘Racist Fish’. The 1.65-meter bronze statue is situated at the entrance of the Copenhagen harbour.
This is not the first time that the statue has been vandalised. In the past, the statue has been beheaded, painted and blown off the rock according to AFP.
It is unclear as to why the statue was targeted and someone is yet to take responsibility for the incident.
A spokesperson for the Copenhagen police said to Reuters: ‘We consider it vandalism and have started an investigation.’

Speaking to Danish broadcaster TV2, Ane Grum-Schwensen, an expert employed by the H.C. Andersen centre at the University of Southern Denmark, said: ‘Of course in general with literary works, you can read them with various glasses. However, I do find it a little difficult to see, what would be especially racist in the adventure The Little Mermaid.’
