A Plettenberg Bay man died from fatal injuries sustained after an encounter with a shark on 28 June. The crew from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) received reports about a shark encounter at Sanctuary Beach, and the swimmer’s body was recovered at the back surf line.
The Western Cape Government Health EMS and the South African Police Services were also at the scene.
Counselling is being provided to the family of the man and the Bitou Municipality has closed beaches in the Plettenberg Bay area.
The NSRI and Bitou Municipality are appealing to sea users all along the Southern Cape coastline is to exercise caution.
