Mosha, an Asian elephant, was only seven months old when she lost her right foreleg in a landmine near the Thai-Myanmar border in the year 2007.
After limping around for the first two years after her injury, Mosha finally received her first prosthetic leg designed by Thai orthopaedic surgeon Therdchai Jivacate.
News24 reported that Mosha could have died, as she was putting a lot of strain on her other three legs and back according to Jivacate. ‘The way she walked was unbalanced and her spine was going to bend. She would have died,’ he said.
Jivacate developed a prosthetic leg for Mosha and with help from Friends of the Asian Elephant (FAE) – the world’s first-ever hospital for elephants – helped ease her back into walking without straining her back and legs.
Since then, Mosha has used up to 10 prosthetic legs, especially because elephants can live up to more than 40 years.
Mosha is a permanent resident patient at the FAE, unlike other elephants that come and go due to the extent of her injuries.
