One of Johannesburg’s most well-known neighbourhoods made it onto Time Out’s 50 coolest neighbourhoods from around the world.
As part of the Time Out Index 2019 survey, the publication asked 27,000 people from across the globe what they thought of neighbourhoods in their cities and towns. The staff at Time Out then ranked the 50 neighbourhoods making the biggest buzz.
Melville comes in 48 out of 50 on the list, only one of three African neighbourhoods, alongside Onikan in Lagos and Jamestown in Accra.
Previously designated a whites-only suburb under apartheid, the old-fashioned has made way for the new becoming on of the city’s best nightlife spots.
Described by Time Out as one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the city, Melville is for the young and trendy.
‘Its situation between two of South Africa’s leading universities, Wits and UJ, makes it home to academics, artists, expats and students living in communal digs,’ said Time Out.
From cute coffee shops serving smashed avo toast to thrifting a great outfit or antique furniture, Melville brings bohemian charm in the middle of South Africa’s commercial capital.
