The second of the two rhino that escaped from Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park last week has been recaptured safely. This rhino reportedly charged at and injured a woman from the local community after another resident fired a shot at it. The rhino is unharmed.

‘Yesterday [Sunday], reports of individuals who were walking along the fence were received and a chopper was dispatched to monitor the area. As it was flying above the fence not far from the Cengeni Gate a rhino was spotted just outside the fence,’ Ezemvelo spokesperson, Musa Mntambo said according to The Witness.
The Ezemvelo Game Capture Unit recaptured and released the rhino into the Park.
Ezemvelo advises visitors not to use the Cengeni Gate. ‘A group of people has blocked the road next to the nearby Sasol garage. The protest is too far from the gate but as a precaution, Ezemvelo advises the public to avoid using the Cengeni Gate which is currently closed. The gate may be opened later today when it is safe to do so,’ Mntambo added.
One lion still remains at large, and community members have expressed their fear. Residents have appealed to the Public Protector and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife to take urgent steps to ensure their safety after a spate of wildlife escapes from the park, largely as a result of the poor condition of the fences.
