A Japanse cruise ship currently docked in the Daikaku Pier Cruise Terminal in Yokohama, Japan, has quarantined over 3,700 passengers. This came after a passenger was diagnosed with the dreaded coronavirus and removed from the ship.
Now, the number of confirmed infected cases has risen to 219, after a further 44 people tested positive on Thursday, 13 February.
In addition, a quarantine officer was also found to be infected with the virus.
‘At this point, we have confirmed that four people among those who are hospitalised are in a serious condition, either on a ventilator or in an intensive care unit,’ said Japanese Health Minister Katsunobu Kato to eNCA.
As the ship enters its second week of quarantine, officials say they are doing everything they can to ensure the process is done as efficiently as possible.
‘Currently we have the capacity to conduct up to 300 tests per day, but we are working… so that by the last day of the incubation period, February 18, we will be able to test up to 1,000,’ government spokesman Yoshihide Suga told reporters at a regular briefing.
The ship has been placed under quarantine since its arrival at the port in Japan on 3 February 2020.
