Moscow Domodedovo Airport in Russia has overtaken London’s Heathrow Airport as the busiest airport in Europe.

According to the latest Anker Report, Sheremetyevo International Airport in Russia and Charles De Gaulle follow in second and third. In fact, Heathrow is no longer in the Top 10 and comes in at number 11 after Vnukovo Airport, also in Russia.

These rankings are based on the number of passengers received by each airport in August 2020. ‘Russian domestic air travel was almost at 2019 levels in August [despite the COVID-19 pandemic], thanks to locals taking their summer holidays at resort destinations within Russia on the Baltic Sea, Black Sea and Caspian Sea,’ compiler of the analysis Ralph Anker told the Independent.

The Moscow Domodedovo Airport welcomed almost 4 million passengers in the first two months of 2020, according to FTNN News. It then went on to welcome 1.7 million passengers in July 2020, a 137% month-on-month rise. The airport saw 4.7 million passengers in total between June and August 2020.

Anker added that airports might even be seeing less activity yet again. Strict travel regulations are being implemented across many parts of Europe as some countries have seen a sharp spike in COVID-19 cases recently.

‘Governments across Europe and around the world appear to be doing their level best to kill off the demand for air travel by introducing ever more quarantine requirements or even just complete travel bans,’ Anker said.
