MSC launched the ‘first nett-zero greenhouse gas emissions cruise on MSC Euribia, MSC’s newest LNG-powered vessel.’
The company reported on key data after MSC Euribia’s first voyage from 3 until 8 June from Saint Nazaire and Copenhagen.
TraveNews reported that the overall voyage saved over 43 tonnes of fuel due to ‘a combination of optimal speed profiles, routing, trim and engine configuration, and strict optimisation of the hotel’s energy consumption, including HVAC, galleys, and lighting, ensured that the ship did not have to use more than two of its four-engined during the voyage.’
Further, heat used for the heating systems, galleys, and hot water came from the ship’s engines, so the ships’ boilers weren’t used.
This successful voyage proves that ‘nett-zero GHG emissions marine operations are possible, as long as alternative fuels are available.’
