Qantas is planning to introduce direct flights between Perth and Johannesburg once Perth Airport undergoes upgrades to handle more passengers and larger planes.
This comes as part of a multi-billion dollar investment project for Perth Airport, which includes upgrades to existing infrastructure, new terminal facilities, and a new parallel runway. The agreement between Qantas and Perth Airport will result in a world-class new airport terminal.
The upgrades at terminals three and four of Perth Airport will enable Qantas to increase capacity, facilitating flights to destinations like Johannesburg and Auckland.
Additionally, Perth Airport is preparing to accommodate larger aircraft like the Airbus A350, which Qantas intends to introduce to its fleet in 2026. These aircraft will likely be used for Qantas’s flagship Perth to London route in the future.
As per The South African, these new routes are expected to start in the middle of next year (2025) pending approval from border agency authorities.
Currently, the only airline operating flights between Perth and South Africa is South African Airways, which recently resumed its services on this route using Airbus A340 aircraft.
