Exploring new cultures is a key reason many of us travel. Every city has a unique story, inviting travelers to dive into its history, lifestyle, and customs. Here are the best destinations for culture lovers based on a study of 47 cities worldwide.

Top cities for cultural exploration

1. Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan’s capital, ranks as the top city for culture enthusiasts. Known for its vibrant streets and modern attractions, Tokyo also boasts the highest number of museums (1,138) and art galleries (503) among the cities studied. Iconic institutions like the Tokyo National Museum and the National Museum of Nature and Science highlight the city’s rich cultural heritage. However, visiting Tokyo can be pricey, with daily costs averaging £53 (R1236) for admissions and tours.

2. Rome

Rome is a historical treasure trove, coming second in the ranking. The Italian capital offers 281 museums and an impressive 3,419 historical and heritage tours. From the ancient Colosseum to the art-filled Vatican, Rome provides endless opportunities to explore its storied past. Visitors spend about £31 (R724) daily on tours and admissions, making it a relatively affordable cultural destination.

3. Cairo

Cairo, Egypt’s bustling capital, ranks third. The city is renowned for its ancient landmarks, including the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. Cairo offers the most historical and heritage tours (6,226) of any city in the study. Despite its rich cultural offerings, Cairo is quite affordable, with tourists spending just £5 (R117) per day on average for admissions and tours.

1. Tokyo

Tokyo leads again with the most art galleries (503). The city offers a mix of classic and contemporary art, from the National Museum of Western Art to the innovative teamLab Planets.

2. London

London follows with 266 art galleries, including the Tate Britain and the Saatchi Gallery. Many of these top-tier galleries, like the National Gallery, offer free entry, making art accessible to all.

3. Prague

Prague is home to 243 art galleries. Notable venues include the historic National Gallery and the modern DOX Centre for Contemporary Art. The city offers a rich blend of artistic experiences in a beautiful setting.

1. Florence

Florence, in Italy’s Tuscany region, is the top city for wine tasting, with 472 tours. Visitors can explore historic vineyards and enjoy authentic Italian wines just outside the city.

2. Rome

Rome offers 311 wine-tasting tours, making it a haven for food and wine lovers. The nearby Lazio region is a significant wine producer, and the city itself has numerous tasting venues, especially in Trastevere.

3. Porto

Porto, Portugal, ranks third with 231 wine-tasting tours. The Douro Valley, accessible from Porto, is a must-visit for its scenic vineyards and diverse wine offerings.
