Nigeria welcomes biometric passport, South Africa set to follow in five-year digitisation plan

From the biometric app for travel in Australia to the facial recognition software for custom clearance in Oman, travel has never been this accessible and hassle-free.

Nigeria is the latest country to incorporate a biometric passport system to streamline border control. While it might seem that only a few governments are using biometric recognition innovations for travel, many countries are making strides to incorporate these systems.

Biometric Updates reported that the Minister of Home Affairs in South Africa, Leon Schreiber, has made a statement regarding making this department’s services available online. This would include digitally applying for ID for passport renewals.

He mentions a five-year plan focusing on digitising Home Affairs services and implementing biometric innovations for Electronic Travel Authorization. This will ensure that border control and visa applications are fast and efficient in South Africa in the future.
