On 7 September, an oil spill was detected and reported to the authorities in Algoa Bay. The MSC Apollo containership has been recognised as the perpetrator, and the damage caused by the spill is currently being investigated.

G Captain has stated that the South African Incident Management Organisation (IMOrg) found minimal damage and evidence of the oil.

“A helicopter surveillance flight on Sunday afternoon, despite strong winds, covered the St. Croix Island group and surrounding areas. No visible oil or sheen was detected.”

However, an affected party has been identified that has been negatively impacted by this spill. News 24 reported that six heavily oiled and endangered penguins have been rescued and treated.

The MSC Apollo has been requested to dock in order to investigate where the leakage within the containership is located. A dock date has been scheduled in order to ensure no further damage will be done.
