Okavango Delta’s Vumbura Plains campsite gets a new look

Posted on 10 March 2022 By David Henning

The Vumbura Plains campsite in the Okavango Delta has been given a makeover, and visitors can lounge in luxury at one of the world’s last natural sanctuaries where the wildlife roams free when it reopens in April.

According to Wilderness Safaris Botwsawa, the camp’s refurbishing celebrates its sense of place within the surrounding culture and Okavango Delta.

The company’s managing director, Kim Nixon, commented that the ‘new design elements showcase the camp’s core purpose, while art installations highlight Vumbura’s heritage through individual stories on basket weaving, local traditional fishing techniques.’

In upgrading the campsite, Wilderness Safaris partnered with the Okavango Community Trust, which distributes funds for community upliftment and aid to remote communities during the construction and staff training.

Vumbura Plains now houses 14 new spacious en-suite rooms,  with an additional outdoor shower and a private plunge pool.

‘Leopard cubs coming to drink at the camp swimming pool, for instance; hippos ‘mowing’ the grasses nearby; a baby elephant being taught how to use his trunk. A truly Okavango experience – even just watching the sunrise, where sun, Earth, and water meet, with the promise of a new adventure,’ According to Wilderness Safaris said.

The Vumbura Plains is situated within a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest inland delta on Earth. Perched on raised decks, the camp almost floats above the water.

Vumbura Plains will welcome guests to its renovated camp after the grand re-opening in mid-April 2022. To find out more about this upgrade camp or to make a booking, visit their website here.
