Tens of thousands of people from around the world are booking Airbnbs in Ukraine, even though none of them are intent on travelling to the tumultuous nation anytime soon.
The reason? It is the fastest and most assured way of getting money to Ukraine as a way to help, where hosts in cities such as Kyiv and Kherson are housing some people who have lost their homes during the war.
To support these acts of relief, Airbnb has decided to forgo guest and host fees for bookings in the country, emphasizing that it won’t be profiting from these charitable bookings.
Airbnb CEO, Brian Chesky, retweeted much of the grateful tweets going round on social media with Ukrainians thanking those who booked with no intention of travelling to Ukraine. These charitable bookings are reported to have raised nearly $2 million in aid.
Airbnb’s charitable wing, Airbnb.org, announced it will provide up to 100 000 refugees leaving Ukraine with short term housing.
