The SAA Pilots Association (SAAPA) will be participating in a strike today (5 December 2024) as part of the ongoing wage increase disputes. As their demands have not been met, they have resorted to more drastic measures to get their point across.
Travel News has reported that a travel advisory statement has been issued in regards to the flight schedule and travellers that might be affected by the strike:
“Customers booked to fly on our services on the affected day will be re-accommodated to the next available flights operated by SAA. We urge our trade partners to manage their booking queues and communicate these changes to our valued customers accordingly…”
According to Reuters, the initial request for the pay increase for pilots was set at 30%, but has been lowered to 15.7%. John Lamola, SAA’s interim chief executive officer, has stated that this would lead to the company’s bankruptcy if implemented. SAA offered a counter in April, which was an increase of 8.46% salary pay rise, which was declined.
Here are a few flights and routes that could be affected when travelling with SAA-associated airlines:
- Johannesburg (JNB) to/from Mauritius (MRU)
- Johannesburg (JNB) to/from Durban (DUR)
- Johannesburg (JNB) to/from Cape Town (CPT)
- Johannesburg (JNB) to/from Windhoek (WDH)
- Johannesburg (JNB) to/from Gqeberha (PLZ)
