Hill’s Pet Nutrition and Cape Animal Dentistry Service have joined forces for an impactful dental initiative at the SANParks K9 Unit in Kruger National Park.
This collaboration aims to revolutionize dental care for South Africa’s dedicated canine heroes while aligning with Hill’s ongoing sustainability drive.
With Hill’s assistance, veterinary dentists have acquired vital medication, equipment, and oxygen cylinders to ensure the success of the program. The team received invaluable support from Dr Guy Fyvie, Dr Megan Brown, and Sr. Brigid Goudie from Hill’s Pet Nutrition, who provided assistance in anaesthetic monitoring, nursing, logistics, and planning throughout the two-week initiative.
In this remarkable collaboration, a total of 53 anti-poaching unit dogs from the greater Kruger area underwent dental procedures worth over R414,000.
The dedicated team addressed the oral health needs of various breeds, including Doberman Bloodhound Crosses, pack hound dogs, Malinois, Dutch and German shepherds, and one spaniel—an indispensable gate detection dog. The comprehensive dental treatments encompassed general scaling and polishing, ensuring the dogs’ oral health was well taken care of.
‘This project has been one of the most rewarding endeavours we have ever worked on,’ Dr Fyvie from Hill’s Pet Nutrition said.
‘The rangers’ immense appreciation for recognising and aiding their dogs is truly heartwarming. We are thrilled to see the long-serving SANPark dogs requiring less dental work each year.
