The Portuguese capital was named Europe’s Best City Destination and Europe’s Best Cruise Destination at the World Travel Awards Europe 2026 ceremony, held on 17 October in Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor.
What makes Lisbon a standout destination?
Lisbon’s appeal lies in its mix of historic neighbourhoods, waterfront views, distinctive architecture and vibrant food culture. Visitors can wander the narrow streets of Alfama, ride the city’s famous yellow trams, explore historic landmarks or settle into a traditional café for a taste of Portuguese life.
The city also offers an easy base for exploring the wider region, from the palaces of Sintra to the beaches and coastal towns beyond the capital.
For cruise travellers, Lisbon combines a scenic port setting with access to the city’s cultural attractions, making it an appealing stop on European itineraries.

Recognition for Lisbon’s tourism offering
According to the Lisbon Tourism Association, the awards recognise the city’s international appeal and the variety of experiences available to visitors.
António Valle, director-general of the association, said the recognition reflects Lisbon’s ability to preserve its identity while catering to different travel interests. He also highlighted the collective effort to improve tourism offerings and showcase the region’s heritage and culture.
The association says its strategy focuses on encouraging visitors to stay longer, explore beyond the capital and discover more of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
A reason to put Lisbon on your travel list
The World Travel Awards recognise destinations and businesses across the global tourism industry. The 2026 European ceremony took place at the Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort in Montenegro, marking the first time the country has hosted the awards in their 33-year history.
For travellers planning a European getaway, Lisbon offers a compelling combination of history, coastal scenery, local cuisine and easy day trips. Its latest awards provide another reason to consider Portugal’s capital for a future city break or cruise holiday.
