Rare white sea turtle hatchling discovered

Posted on 22 October 2020

A group of volunteers from Kiawah Island in South Carolina, USA discovered a rare white sea turtle hatchling while inspecting sea turtle nests.

The hatchling was crawling across the sand when it was found.

The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol were excited by their discovery and shared the rare sighting on Facebook. ‘It was a first for everyone in attendance!,’ said the post.

The hatchling has a condition called leucism, which is the partial loss of pigmentation, where skin, hair, feathers or scales appears white, pale or patchy in colour but not the eyes.

The chance of the little one’s survival is low, as it will be unable to disguise itself.
