A rhino died during a failed media demonstration of an anti-poaching treatment which was tested on the animal this morning. Another rhino that shouldn’t have died…
The media was invited to witness an anti-poaching demonstration on the 9th February 2012 at the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve in the Cradle of Humankind. Reporters attending the event tweeted pictures and information about the procedure being carried out in front of them. At 11h00 @JacaNews tweeted: ‘Sad news, the #rhino has died, after struggling to wake up.’ Experts suspect that the 20-something rhino had a heart condition.
A microchip and tracking device was implanted in his horn, but he responded badly to the anesthetic’s antidote and died. According to reports the rhino had an underlying heart condition and the antidote may have triggered heart failure.
#rhino trended in South Africa throughout the day. Click here for the Times live article.
The aim of the procedure was to deter poachers but sadly we lost one trying to protect it.
