Parts of the country have experienced heavy rainfall, especially in the Western Cape where localised flooding has occurred.
In Citrusdal in the Cederberg municipality, the bridge crossing the Olifants River into town from the N7 has collapsed and the river is in full flood.
The municipality says that the access road to and from the town had been washed away on 15 June.
- About 88 people have been evacuated from the Riverview Informal Settlement and temporarily housed in the Oranjeville Sports Hall;
- Although Bo-river and Hexriver are open, the road to Elandskloof is closed;
- Grade 4 to Grade 7 learner exams are postponed to Monday, 19 June, for children living outside of Citrusdal;
- The electricity is off in parts of Citrusdal and Clanwilliam due to an Eskom fault;
- About 57 people who lived in temporary housing on the sports grounds in Wupperthal were evacuated and moved to the Eendrag Community Hall.
As per a municipal statement, the water infrastructure in Citrusdal is currently under severe pressure and residents are urged to use water sparingly. ‘We request the communities to cooperate with authorities and stay clear of roads and affected areas. The municipality is assessing the municipal infrastructure across the municipal area and organising food parcels and blankets for displaced /affected persons.’
