Qatar Airways has acquired a 25% stake in South Africa’s Airlink. This is as per an announcement made on the 20th of August.
According to FlightGlobal, the deal is part of an integral strategy to cement Qatar Airways in an African market.
Airlink has seen development over the years, thus establishing itself as a key player in the African aviation scene. This has served as a contributing factor in Qatar’s interest in the SA-based airline.
As per The South African, Qatar Airways CEO, Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, expressed that Africa is significant in their airline’s growth strategy. This is as he noted that the continent represents 18% of the world’s population, while also remaining undeserved in terms of air connectivity.
Currently, Airlink boasts a fleet of over 65 aircraft, as well as a passenger count which exceeds 3 million people.
The partnership between the airline and Doha-based Qatar Airways is expected to further bolster operational capacity and network reach.
