The number of overseas arrivals in South Africa over the first six months of 2024 has surpassed the one million mark. This is according to the latest international tourism report by Statistics South Africa.
The report also showed that the country had not fully recovered in comparison to its pre-pandemic numbers.
According to Tourism Update, the country reached 1.064 million arrivals from overseas (85% of the 1.25m overseas arrivals recorded in the first half of 2019).
When including intra-African tourists, the total arrivals amounted to 4.44 million (89% of the 5.095m in the first half of 2019).
The recorded arrivals are from different parts of the world, including Europe, United States, South America and Asia.
As per The South African, around 16 800 passengers made their way to and from Brazil during the first 90 days of SAA operating their Cape Town-São Paulo route. This was confirmed by Khaya Buthelezi, SAA Spokesperson.
“According to the tourism authorities in the Western Cape, for the first three months following the inaugural flight from Cape Town, there has been an increase in two-way passenger traffic between Cape Town and Brazil. These numbers speak volumes regarding the latent demand between the two destinations,”
