SAAMBR rescues a stranded fur seal on Treasure Beach, KZN

The South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) was called to assist with a stranded Subantarctic fur seal at Treasure Beach, KZN last week Tuesday, 30 May.

The fur seal presented no signs of external trauma, but appeared lethargic and a little underweight. SAAMBR consulted with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the decision was made to transport the seal to uShaka Sea World to recuperate.

SAAMBR Clinical Veterinarian Dr Caryl Knox explained that ‘although the seal presents as quite feisty, he appears a little underweight. To give him a helping hand we administered fluids and supplements.’

He’s quickly become a celebrity, ‘being the first seal patient admitted to the SAAMBR rehabilitation facility this year.’ They’ve named him after one of their technical staff members, Armand.

After receiving rehydration fluids and resting soundly for two days, he seemed to have regained most of his strength and the decision was made to relocate him to a quiet beach in a marine-protected area on the KZN lower south coast.

Before leaving uShaka Sea World, a small patch on his rear was painted white so that he can be identified, if and when he hauls out again along the KZN coastline.

GP Security very kindly offered to stand guard over Armand until he was fully rested and headed back into the ocean on his journey home.

SAAMBR have asked the public that if they happen to see Armand, please send any videos or photographs through to them. They also remind the public not to disturb him or any other resting seal.
